Pending ratification by the Akron-AAUP membership and the UA Board of Trustees we have secured same-sex domestic partner benefits for bargaining unit faculty.
Negotiations Update: Domestic Partner Benefits
Counsel for the University of Akron's negotiating team has expressed a concern that granting domestic partner benefits may violate Ohio's Defense of Marriage constitutional amendment. Counsel for the University has sought an opinion on the matter from Ohio Attorney General, Richard Cordray.
Counsel for Akron-AAUP has followed the University's request with a letter to Attorney General Cordray clarifying the terms of our proposal and correcting inaccuracies in the University's characterization of Akron-AAUP's position.
A few of our colleagues have expressed concern that Akron-AAUP's negotiating team is not pursuing this benefit with sufficient energy and diligence. This is not true. We wish all to be aware that the issue of domestic partner benefits remains one of paramount importance to the chapter's Executive Committee and negotiators. The negotiating team remains resolute in its commitment to securing equitable treatment of all faculty.
