Akron AAUP Protecting Academic Freedom For a Free Society
The University of Akron Chapter |
American Association of University Professors

On December 3rd the Akron-AAUP negotiating team, in keeping with the terms of the collecting bargaining agreement, served notice to the University of Akron that the chapter wishes to begin negotiating the terms of Article 16, section 5. That section of the current contract provides for a negotiating “re-opener” concerning compensation for the 2013-2014 academic year. These first negotiations will be limited solely to that item.

These initial talks should serve well as an opening to full negotiations on the entire collective bargaining agreement. The agreement is set to expire at 12:01 a.m. December 15, 2013.

The chapter’s negotiating team and executive committee are confident that good-faith bargaining and a timely start to negotiations can bring this process to a productive close earlier rather than much, much later. It is the hope of the Akron-AAUP team that an agreement on next year’s compensation can be reached in advance of the new academic year so as to minimize delays in implementation of faculty salary adjustments.

The Higher Learning Commission visit, part of the accreditation process for the University of Akron, will take place in March 2013. Akron-AAUP representatives are confident that it would serve The University of Akron well to be able to report progress and productive talks on matters of importance to both faculty and administration.

Akron-AAUP, in it’s role as the sole bargaining representative of the faculty, looks forward to the University’s response and a timely initiation of good faith bargaining.

The Akron-AAUP negotiating team consists of: Chief Negotiator Mike Cheung, legal counsel Eben “Sandy” McNair, and members Elizabeth Kennedy, Kevin Kreider and John Reeves.
